Media Player Won't Play Dvds After Reinstallation Of Xp.?

Have you tried reinstalling windows 7, (in order to reinstall it you just click up grade for that only installs the registry files again). When I select VIDEO_TS.VOB, it shows the DVD menu. I can hear sound (a lot of the time anyways), but no picture. Now the drive dosn't play any disk. http://nanextechnologies.com/media-player/can-windows-media-player-play-mp4.html

During the XP timeframe when DVD drives were around 20% of the market or less (remember XP has been out for forever!) that made much sense.

Is that something that comes default with the computer when you first get it but is not on the reinstallation cd? I know i can get VLC player and it'll play but i'm tryign to figure out why exactly WMP, Real Player, and everything else can no longer play dvd's.
